MDE’s Working through the Legal Framework of School Discipline training provides an overview of how to uphold students’ due process protections throughout the school discipline process. The training will discuss Minnesota’s Pupil Fair Dismissal Act (PFDA) and federal laws that comprise the legal framework for school discipline, with an emphasis on the importance of alternatives to suspension and the use of positive behavioral interventions and supports. The training also includes essential information about supporting students with individualized education programs (IEPs) through alternative educational services, manifestation determinations, and consideration of unique circumstances.
